Adopt A Monument

Kansas City, Adopt A Monument is a grassroots effort to raise both awareness of and endowment funds for local outdoor public sculpture.  The group was formed in 1994 after a national survey, Save Outdoor Sculpture!, conducted by the Smithsonian Institute, identified twenty-nine endangered landmarks in the Kansas City metropolitan area.  Volunteers notified the owners of the condition of the monuments and assisted with their conservation when possible. Since 1996, when the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation adopted the Sea Horse Fountains at City Hall, the group has raised over $200,000 to conserve and endow our local landmarks. The endowment funds are managed by the City of Fountains Foundation. Volunteers continue to identify, survey and photograph new sculptures and fountains.
