Fountain Basin/ aka A Mind Soothed

Of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of  Art, J. C. Nichols said: "We had always in mind that unwelcome disease, 'museum fatigue',  and everything is planned to prevent it." The opening of Roselle Court in 1933 featured the fountain in its center. The massive marble bowl, purchased in Italy around 1930 and carved from a single piece of cipollino marine marble, weighs approximately four tons. The bowl dates from around 200 A. D. and the base, consisting of four lion paws, was designed by Thomas Wight of Wight & Wight, designers of the Museum. Water overflows to the basin below and is returned by eight nozzles arching upward.
