KANSAS CITY SYMPHONY
City of Fountains Celebration
As we celebrate our inaugural season in the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts we also celebrate Kansas City and its identity as the “City of Fountains.” We will present three world premieres in our first season, all inspired by the gorgeous fountains of our city. Just as Respighi wrote his stunning Fountains of Rome, we will present three new works commission for our opening season by three marvelous composers: Stephen Hartke, Daniel Kellogg, and Kansas City’s own Chen Yi. This will be a season-long salute to our home city and to these living works of art that so inspire Kansas Citians of all ages.
Michael Stern
The City of Fountains Celebration begins with Chen Yi’s Fountains of KC, launching the Symphony’s new era in Helzberg Hall at the Kauffman Center during the Classical Series opening concerts September 23-25. Daniel Kellogg’s Water Music premieres March 30 – April 1, 2012 and the world premiere of Steven Hartke’s Muse of Missouri takes place June 15-17, 2012.
In between these performances, fans will have access to comprehensive content on the Symphony’s new website, including resources such as interview transcripts, podcasts, blogs, photos, background information and links to related websites.
Other events and opportunities in conjunction with the Celebration include visual media postings, master classes, open rehearsals for students, fountain tours, and a special presentation concerning our city’s fountains.
